Whether you are in the middle of a large DIY project or a small one, safety should always come first!

Here are five tips from our Coastal Hardware team on how to safeguard yourself when handling tools.

Be prepared.

Always have a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit nearby. In case of an emergency, you will not need to go looking for them.

Check your lighting.

Make sure the space you are working in is well lit so you can clearly see what you are doing.

Protect yourself.

Wear safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves, depending on the type of project and the tools you’re using. Also wear closed shoes and remove dangling jewellery. If you have long hair, make sure it is tied back securely.

Eliminate tripping hazards.

Tidy up your work space. It is no fun tripping over cords or slipping on an oil slick!

Stay alert.

Do not work if you are tired or after you have taken medication or after drinking alcohol. Accidents can happen when you are not alert.
